Lucknow: In Kushinagar district, Uttar Pradesh, rescue teams recovered ten additional unidentified bodies from the Gandak (Narayani) river by Tuesday morning. This grim discovery follows significant flooding in Nepal, which led to a rapid increase in the river’s water level and flow. The floods have raised serious concerns about safety and the humanitarian impact in the region.
With the latest recoveries, the number of bodies found in the river in Kushinagar and Maharajganj districts since Aug 27 has risen to 17, officials said. The number of bodies has reached 13 in Kushinagar,” an official said. In Maharajganj, officials said that bodies of three women and a man were recovered on Aug 26-27.
Kushinagar SP Keshav Kumar said the identities of the deceased had not been established yet. “We have conducted post-mortem of all the 13 bodies recovered so far in the district and given the report and all its exhibits to the authorities in Nepal,” he said. The sub-divisional magistrate, Khadda circle officer, local police and State Disaster Response Force personnel retrieved the bodies and shifted them to the district mortuary. “Ten more bodies have come from two police station areas of Khadda and Barwapatti.
Earlier, seven bodies were found in the river, three in Kushinagar and four in Maharajganj.

Nichaul circle officer Ravindra Kumar Singh said the SSB and district administration contacted their counterparts in Nepal to facilitate identification of the deceased. As a precautionary measure, the district administration has suspended boat operations in the river. Download the TOI App.
