Lucknow: A 13-year-old Class VIII student died during treatment in Hardoi days after she was allegedly assaulted by a teacher and a classmate at her school. Police have registered a case of culpable homicide under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and arrested the teacher, officials said on Tuesday.

The girl had gone to school on Aug 20 to appear for a science examination, according to a complaint lodged by her father. Based on a written complaint submitted on Aug 31, police lodged an FIR against the teacher and the student. When she reported the incident to her teacher, he allegedly beat her and twisted both her arms, causing fractures and severe nerve injuries.

The family members said that they also approached the principal but no action was taken. Hardoi superintendent of police Ashok Meena said they were scrutinising medical records and recording statements of witnesses to establish the sequence of events and determine the role of each accused. She was allegedly assaulted by a fellow student during the exam. The incident came to light after the girl’s younger sister informed family members. Relatives rushed to the school and confronted the teacher. Instead, they were advised to seek medical treatment for the girl.
