Travis Kelce’s latest absence has put Kansas City Chiefs fans on alert just days before the team opens its 2026 campaign. The 36-year-old tight end chose to continue his career after considering retirement, and his comments during the offseason suggested that he still believes he has more to accomplish. “Year 14, baby, I’m fired up. Last season, he finished with 76 receptions for 851 yards. That followed a career-low 823 receiving yards in 2024, leading to questions about how much longer he can maintain his elite production. Kelce currently has 13,002 career receiving yards. He needs 45 more to move past Jason Witten and claim second place among tight ends on the NFL’s all-time receiving yardage list.

The update came through Kansas City Star reporter Pete Sweeney, who cited longtime Chiefs radio voice Mitch Holthus when reporting Kelce’s absence. “Travis Kelce is not at the Chiefs’ annual kickoff luncheon. That remains the clearest information available about Kelce’s condition. Neither the Chiefs nor the player has indicated that the illness is serious, and there has been no confirmation that it will prevent him from taking the field when Kansas City begins its season. Still, missing a major team event so close to opening day was enough to raise eyebrows. Kelce has plenty of motivation entering his 14th NFL season. “I still haven’t played the perfect game. His ambition has not faded with age. If anything, Kelce appears determined to make another serious run at success alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes . Every year there’s a chance to do something special, but especially coming into this year, getting Pat [Mahomes] back and wiping the slate clean. There is also history within reach. For now, Kansas City has little reason to panic.
