HEAD: 24_Kol_DG_Dwaipayan Two Maid Thefts Byline: Dwaipayan Ghosh Police register theft cases against maid servants in kolkata Dwaipayan Ghosh Kolkata: Police registered 2 theft cases alleging maid servants stole gold ornaments and cash worth about Rs 10 lakh from homes in Entally and Kasba’s Rajdanga area. Entally police registered a case under section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita over an alleged theft from a Canal Street apartment. Police said the theft occurred sometime between November and December last year, when the accused, identified as Purnima Mayra of Sitagacchi, Tajpur, Mathurapur in South 24 Parganas, was employed as a maid at the residence.
The complaint alleged the theft of a long “sita haar”, a pair of gold-and-emerald bangles, a gold “mang tika”, steel utensils, various clothing items, and cash. The theft was detected only on Monday.
In a separate incident, police recorded a complaint from a 44-year-old resident of Rajdanga Main Road, Kasba, alleging theft by his maid servant, identified as Debola Sardar. The theft took place on January 28, around 9.15 am, at the complainant’s residence, according to the complaint. The items reported stolen include Rs 5,000 in cash and 2 gold rings fitted with pearl and cat’s eye, weighing about 4 grams. Raids are being conducted in South 24 Parganas in this regard. A detective department officer said police are intensifying efforts to address such complaints, which, according to officers, were reported more frequently since the pandemic.
Police said both cases are being investigated, and the accused persons were named in the respective complaints. One primary objective will be to hire only from trusted agencies, one which comes with recommendations from across several quarters,” the officer said. The officer said arrests in such cases are common and that the police are committed to cracking down on thefts to ensure residents’ safety and security.
The incident added to concerns among residents about thefts allegedly involving domestic workers and the need for verification before hiring. It came hours after a caregiver allegedly murdered her employer at Behala Natunpara. A senior Kolkata Police officer urged households to adopt basic precautions, including securing valuables and ensuring domestic staff verification. “A few simple steps need to be followed to stop chances of becoming victims of such crimes.
