It may be noted that only a few days ago, another forest-dependent worker lost his life in a similar tiger attack while catching crabs in the Sundarbans. He was survived by his wife and a minor child. The sudden tragedy left his family and the entire village in shock. His companions reportedly tried to fend off the animal by shouting and using sticks, but they could not rescue him completely from the tiger’s grip. Severely injured, Dhali was eventually pulled out of the forest. However, his injuries were so critical that he succumbed before he received medical treatment. Repeated incidents once again raised questions about the safety measures in place for those who risk their lives daily to earn a living from the forest. Local residents demanded stronger safety protocols and increased surveillance to prevent further loss of lives in the tiger reserve. Download the TOI App.
Gopal ventured deep into the forest on Sunday with two companions to catch crabs, a primary source of livelihood for many in the area, according to local sources. On Monday morning, while they were working in the Chamta forest, a tiger suddenly pounced on him. The body was sent for post-mortem on Tuesday.
