There are around 84 landowners in and around the project area, he said. Arun Prabha also said the old bus stand building was more than seven decades old, while the surrounding buildings were around 40 years old. He added that there was a proposal to lease the land to the bidder for 30 years. Following the inspection, Pandey directed officials concerned to submit a month-wise milestone report for 15 months within a week to facilitate regular monitoring of the work.

He said the project had encountered challenges as some landowners had not agreed to part with their properties to provide the space required for the road and the project. He said the matter would be examined comprehensively and appropriate steps taken. Pandey first visited the site of the proposed multi-level car parking (MLCP) facility at the old bus stand premises on KS Rao Road. The project is being taken up under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. Pandey reviewed the project’s progress and discussed its implementation. Arun Prabha, general manager of Mangaluru Smart City Limited, briefed him on the bidding process, investment, construction quality and land acquisition requirements. Later, the commissioner visited the wet-well site at Surathkal-Idya and obtained details from officials about the pumping system and problems faced by local residents. During an interaction with residents, he was informed that they were opposed to the installation of the wet-well system in their neighbourhood. Residents alleged that the system was contaminating well water in the area. Pandey inspected the well water on the spot and directed officials to collect samples and send them to a laboratory for quality testing. He assured residents that their views and concerns would be taken into consideration and that no action would be taken against their wishes. Officials from the MCC engineering department and the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) were present during the inspection. Download the TOI App.
