Led by former mayor and ex-MLC Sandip Joshi, the organisers, West Nagpur BJYM, replaced the ear-shattering beats of a DJ with bhajan jamming, live orchestra and dhol-tasha. Nagpur: Dharampeth hosted one of the city’s biggest Dahi Handi events on Sunday without the deafening noise of DJs.
Celebration Adheres to Sound Regulations Amidst Controversy
The recent celebration led by Joshi was characterized by a strong emphasis on devotion, described as ‘bhakti bhav’. Traditional bhajans accompanied the Govinda pathaks, maintaining a focus on cultural reverence. Notably, the event adhered to prescribed sound limits as mandated by existing court directives. Joshi acknowledged the support from the local community, Nagpurkars, which facilitated a DJ-free environment in line with his advocacy for restrictions on high-decibel sound systems and laser lights.
This decision gained importance following the standoff at Badkas Chowk on Friday, where organizers and police engaged in extensive discussions regarding the proposed use of high-powered sound systems and beam lights. Ultimately, the event proceeded with music after the removal of the heavier bass component, with sound levels closely monitored to ensure compliance with regulations.
