The forest department had formed multiple teams to share the workload as the tigress’ killing spree — two victims in 24 hours — had triggered unrest in villages of Morshi and Chandur Bazar taluka. On Monday morning, the tigress resurfaced in Shirajgaon Kasba where it killed a 45-year-old farmer, Dinesh Aware, apart from two bovines nearby. Aware’s death came a day after the tigress killed 18-year-old tribal girl Urmila Ivane in Sonori on Sunday. Ivane had gone to cut fodder around 4 pm when she spotted the tigress and tried to climb a tree, but was dragged into the bushes. Following her death, the forest department constituted a four-member inquiry committee headed by assistant conservator Akshay Lanjhe and began the process to pay Rs 25 lakh compensation to her family.
After the human kill, the tigress dug in heels near the body, triggering fresh panic before forest staff rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation.
Sources said, medical investigations, including an autopsy will be carried out to find the cause. The big cat was set to be transported to Nagpur’s Gorewada Wildlife Research and Treatment Centre for long-term care. However, the tigress could not be revived at the forest facility at Paratwada in Amravati. With the maneater’s terror coming to an end, residents of Morshi and Chandur bazar tehsils heaved a sigh of relief. Her body was later found by villagers, whose anger over the forest department’s failure to capture the animal led to the vandalising of a forest vehicle. Along with citizens, political pressure started building up and forest department was on the maneater’s trail from Sunday.

The 12-day search had snowballed into a major public and political flashpoint, with wildlife activists Vijay Takare and Nilesh Kanchanpure and political leaders including former MP and BJP leader Navneet Rana, Chandur Bazar MLA Praveen Tayde, MLC Bachhu Kadu and former Melghat MLA Rajkumar Patel demanding immediate capture of the tigress. The terror streak began on Aug 27 in Bhambora village (Morshi), when 55-year-old farmer Charandas Ikhe was grabbed by the neck from the farm and dragged nearly 200 feet to a nullah. The tigress then travelled nearly 50 km from Morshi to Chandur Bazar, attacking a cow at Mauza Najarpur farm in Ridhapur before its final two kills over the weekend.
Rana, who visited Sonori on Monday and consoled Ivane’s family, directly called forest minister Ganesh Naik, principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF) Reddy and chief conservator of forests (CCF) Jayoti Bannerjee, demanding a helicopter be deployed for the search, arguing that drone cameras had proved ineffective due to the monsoon.
