A knee injury wiped out much of his 2025-26 campaign, and now, with a new contract on the table, Golden State’s franchise cornerstone is being asked two questions at once: can he stay healthy, and will he stay a Warrior for good? Stephen Curry’s 2025-26 season never really found its footing. Runner’s knee kept him out for stretches, and he finished with just 43 regular-season appearances, one of the lowest totals of his career outside of the shortened 2019-20 and 2011-12 seasons. Golden State finished 37-45, and the flashes of vintage Curry, like his outburst in the play-in game in Los Angeles, couldn’t carry over into the next round against Phoenix. He’s currently under contract through 2026-27 at $62.6 million, the highest annual salary in the league, and the NBA’s Over-38 Rule caps any new deal at two years and $136.7 million. At 38, with 26.6 points per game and a 12th All-Star selection to show for an injury-shortened year, Curry isn’t chasing validation.
Contract talks, he explained, won’t distract him or the team from preparing for a season he badly wants to make count, especially after watching so much of last year from the sidelines. Stephen Curry is heading into a season with high championship expectations. Curry became eligible for a new maximum extension over the weekend, right as he begins preparing for his 18th NBA season. He also made a point of separating the business side from basketball. He’s chasing a healthy season, and by his own account, and his wife’s, he’s already put in the work to get there.
