Lucknow resident was duped of ₹74 lakh in an elaborate online trading scam after fraudsters

Lucknow resident was duped of ₹74 lakh in an elaborate online trading scam after fraudsters lured him with promises of huge returns and repeatedly demanded money on various pretexts to release his purported profits.

Hari Mohan, a resident of Sector-H in LDA Colony on Kanpur Road, was contacted on Facebook in April 2026 by a man who identified himself as Ganesh Agrawal, according to a complaint filed with Cyber Crime police. The caller allegedly convinced him to invest in an online trading scheme and later displayed a purported profit of $240,000. Trusting the claims, Hari Mohan allegedly transferred around ₹47.7 lakh in instalments.

Police said the accused began seeking money under multiple heads, including capital gains tax, currency conversion charges and insurance fees, repeatedly assuring the victim that the payments were mandatory to process and release the overseas funds.

Despite further payments, the victim neither received the alleged profits nor recovered his investment.

Cyber Crime Investigation Launched Following Fund Misappropriation Claims

Cyber Crime police have initiated an investigation into allegations that the accused misled a victim by claiming that funds were being held by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in Delhi. The accused reportedly requested additional money while using forged documents purportedly from the Crime Branch in Tamil Nadu to intimidate the victim. The case has been officially registered as part of the ongoing inquiry.
