Meerut: A two-storey house collapsed in Moradabad on Thursday afternoon, trapping the owner’s wife, Gulabo alias Oleba Khatun, 30, under the debris.

Police said Gulabo died during treatment. SP rural Moradabad, Kunwar Akash Singh, said, “Police and disaster management teams rescued the woman, in critical condition. “The woman was alone at the time of the incident as the male members were out for work,” a resident added.

She later died. The incident took place in Aka Bhikhanpur village in Bhojpur area. Local authorities inspected the damage and ordered an investigation into the cause of the collapse. Preliminary investigation indicates the walls had weakened considerably. After a prolonged effort, locals along with police managed to pull the woman out from under the rubble. She was first taken to the nearest primary health centre for initial treatment before being moved to another facility. Thursday’s incident comes after a dilapidated three-storey house, belonging to a brass trader, collapsed amid heavy rainfall in Moradabad early Sunday. The place was vacant at the time.

The walls might have been weak since there was water filled in the foundation due to rains.”

Mohd Nazim, the victim’s brother-in-law, said, “The house was built recently.
