The survey began on Sep 1, 2026, which will continue till September 30, 2027. Varanasi: The Horticulturist Unit of Banaras Hindu University has launched a year-long Bird and Wildlife Survey to document the diversity and distribution of wildlife on the BHU main campus and IIT premises. Members of the university have been invited to participate by submitting photographs of wildlife spotted on campus through a Google Form, along with location details and other relevant information.
Wherever possible, images with a resolution of around 1600 × 2400 pixels or higher should be uploaded. Students, teachers, non-teaching staff, campus residents and other members of the university community can contribute to the survey, according to a BHU spokesperson. Photographs and details of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals may be submitted. Each wildlife observation must be entered separately in the form. Participants are required to provide the common name of the species, its scientific name if known, the date and time of photography, the location, and a screenshot of the observation site on Google Maps. A certificate will be issued for every valid submission. Cash prizes will also be awarded for the best photographs selected in each category. Selected photographs are proposed to be featured in the BHU Biodiversity Book, along with the names of the photographers. Participants have been advised to upload only clear, original photographs personally taken within the BHU campus. Images sourced from the internet, social media, books, publications or any other external source must not be submitted. The university has also urged participants not to disturb, catch, feed, chase or interfere with wildlife while taking photographs. Download the TOI App.
