A 50-year-old farmer from Shembavne village in Shahuwadi tehsil was killed in an alleged wild

Kolhapur : A 50-year-old farmer from Shembavne village in Shahuwadi tehsil was killed in an alleged wild animal attack on Wednesday.

The body remained at the hospital till late at night as relatives refused to take possession until the forest department announced a compensation for the incident.

Sanjay Dhondiba Pankar’s brother Balu Pankar told police that a leopard attacked him when the siblings had gone to Navladeviwadi around 4pm to bring back the cattle they had left outside the village for grazing. When they were about 1km outside the village, the brothers went in different directions, Balu Pankar said. “Suddenly, a wild animal hiding in the bushes attacked Sanjay,” he told police. Hearing Sanjay’s loud screams, Balu said he went in his direction and found his brother in an injured condition.

He got the help of some villagers and they took the injured man to Malkapur Rural Hospital for treatment. But, doctors declared he was brought dead. Sanjay is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son, two brothers and his mother.
