Mumbai: The IMD has forecast a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar on September 12 and 13, warning of thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph at isolated places. On September 14, the first day of Ganpati, Mumbai is expected to see moderate rain, while on September 15, the first day of idol immersions, the city is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall. Since June 1 this year, the IMD’s Colaba observatory has recorded 1,809.9 mm of rainfall, while the Santacruz observatory has recorded 2,259.9 mm. With little or no rain recorded over the past few days, Colaba has now started showing a rainfall departure, with the cumulative figure standing at 4.3 mm below normal. Santacruz, meanwhile, is currently 7 mm above normal. The normal date for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Mumbai is October 8. Last year, withdrawal was declared exactly a week later, on October 15. In 2024, the withdrawal was delayed further, with the IMD declaring it on October 23.
