Palghar : Palghar police on Friday detained Shiv Sena deputy Palghar taluka chief Rohit Gavit, son of MLA Rajendra Gavit, from his Mira Road residence and Sairaj Patil from Shirdi, and arrested 12 members of a dahi handi troupe in connection with the assault on an employee of a private hospital in Palghar on September 6. Police said 13 of the 17 accused named in the FIR have now been arrested, while two are in police custody. Police had arrested now-suspended Shiv Sena Palghar city chief Rahul Gharat on September 7. The 12 arrested accused, who are members of a dahi handi troupe, were produced before Palghar sessions court, which remanded them in police custody till Sunday. The incident took place in the early hours of September 6, when local Shiv Sena functionaries allegedly created a ruckus at Relief Hospital over the treatment of injured govindas.

Police traced Gavit to his residence after he inserted a new SIM card into his mobile phone, enabling investigators to track his location through technical surveillance. They allegedly assaulted a hospital employee and took away five injured govindas admitted to the ICU. The investigation has been transferred from Palghar sub-divisional police officer Umesh Gawali to Dahanu sub-divisional police officer Nisha Jadhav.

Gavit and Patil will be produced before the court on Saturday, and may be placed under arrest, said sources.
