New Delhi: The 8.4-km Tughlaqabad-Sangam Vihar section of Delhi Metro’s Golden Line is likely to be completed by Dec, making it the first stretch of the corridor to become operational. The section will have four stations: Tughlaqabad, Tughlaqabad Railway Colony, Anandmayee Marg Junction and Sangam Vihar. Tughlaqabad station will serve as an interchange with Violet Line.
The 23.6-km Golden Line, connecting Aerocity and Tughlaqabad through 15 stations, will be opened in phases. The corridor also includes a 2.4-km double-decker structure between Sangam Vihar and Ambedkar Nagar, with Metro running on the upper deck and vehicles on the lower deck. “More than 83% of the civil work has been completed on the Aerocity-Tughlaqabad corridor. Under Phase IV, an 8.3-km corridor is being built between Lajpat Nagar and Saket G Block. Two more stretches are part of Phase V(A): the 2.2-km Aerocity-IGI Terminal 1 corridor and the 3.9-km Kalindi Kunj-Tughlaqabad corridor. These extensions will take the total length of Golden Line to 38.2 km.
The Tughlaqabad-Sangam Vihar section of this corridor is expected to open by Dec this year, while the remaining section will open in phases subsequently,” said Anuj Dayal, principal executive director, corporate communications, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Of the four stations in the first phase, Tughlaqabad, Tughlaqabad Railway Colony and Anandmayee Marg Junction will be underground, while Sangam Vihar will be elevated. DMRC is also constructing three extensions of Golden Line. Golden Line, once fully operational, is expected to boost connectivity across south Delhi and provide improved connectivity to Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The Aerocity-Terminal 1 extension will turn Terminal 1 into an interchange station with the Magenta Line and strengthen Aerocity’s role as a transit hub connecting Airport Express Line, Golden Line and the proposed Delhi-SNB-Alwar RRTS corridor. “The IGI Terminal-1 station will serve as an interchange with the Magenta Line, eliminating the need for shuttle bus transfers between the domestic and international terminals. Commuters will be able to travel conveniently between different parts of the airport by metro,” an official said. Delhi Metro also plans to run India’s first three-coach train corridor on the Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block route to cater to short-distance urban travel and improve connectivity to residential and commercial hubs in south Delhi.
