Chris Jones has emerged with a calf injury ahead of the Week 1 clash with the Denver Broncos, while left tackle Josh Simmons is also battling a back issue. Denver recorded an NFL-high 68 sacks last season, so Kansas City needs its defense to win key downs and keep Bo Nix from settling into a rhythm. He finished 2025 with seven sacks, 15 tackles for loss and 63 pressures across 17 games. His 25 quarterback hits also led the Chiefs.
Because of the calf issue, the veteran defensive tackle was a full participant Thursday but was limited Friday. Patrick Mahomes is set for a difficult return, and the Kansas City Chiefs may have just lost one of their biggest advantages.
Denver reporter Zac Stevens highlighted the development on X, writing, “Chris Jones has a new calf injury,” before adding, “He was limited in practice today. With Denver’s fierce pass rush waiting, Kansas City suddenly has serious concerns on both sides of the ball. Jones’ late appearance on the injury report has added another layer of uncertainty to an already demanding matchup. Could be very significant. The timing matters. Jones is central to that plan. More than his numbers, though, Jones gives Kansas City experience and leadership in the trenches.
The Broncos allowed only 18.3 points per game last season and finished second in total defense, giving up 278.2 yards per contest. Mahomes was already sacked 34 times in 2025, making protection a major storyline for his return. With Jones potentially limited and Simmons uncertain, the Chiefs could enter Week 1 with two critical pieces compromised.

Defensive line coach Joe Cullen previously praised that side of his game, saying: “He’s developed into a great leader,” Cullen said. “In the meeting rooms, he’s explaining to guys things I may be [going over], saying, ‘Hey Coach, can I give a point here? After practice, he’s working with the guys and coaching them up. Simmons’ status could have a more direct effect on Mahomes While Jones’ injury would hurt Kansas City’s defense. The Chiefs left tackle has been dealing with a back injury for more than a week. If he cannot suit up, Kansas City could turn to rookie Kahlil Benson. The concern is obvious: Benson did not play left tackle during his four-year college career. That would be a daunting assignment against Denver. Denver’s pass rush has the personnel to exploit even a small weakness along the offensive line. The Chiefs have also struggled to find long-term stability at left tackle since Orlando Brown Jr. departed. Donovan Smith, Wanya Morris, Kingsley Suamataia, D.J. Humphries and Joe Thuney have all been part of the rotation in recent seasons. Kansas City will have to protect him, control the clock and avoid putting its quarterback in obvious passing situations.
