Madurai Malligai, the city’s prized jasmine variety, commanded the highest rates on Sunday, with good-quality jasmine selling for Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,700 a kg in the wholesale market. Pitchi sold for around Rs 1,000 a kg, while Mullai touched Rs 900. Kanakambaram was among the costliest varieties, fetching Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 a kg, depending on quality and availability. Decorative flowers also remained firm, with Rose selling at around Rs 300 a kg, Paneer Rose at Rs 350 and Button Rose at Rs 250. Chrysanthemum fetched around Rs 250 a kg and Sampangi Rs 300, while Marigold and Kozhikondai were comparatively cheaper at about Rs 80 a kg each. Lotus flowers sold at around Rs 50 apiece.

Traders said reduced arrivals from flower-growing belts around Madurai and neighbouring districts had tightened supply just as demand increased for household pujas, temple rituals and festive decorations. “With the consecration ceremony happening this week and pilgrimage season starting soon, the next five to six months will continue to see heightened prices for these flowers,” said S Shanti, a vendor at the market. Retail prices were higher, depending on local demand and export orders. Vendors attributed the lower arrivals to reduced supplies from Vadipatti, Alanganallur, Palamedu, Thiruparankundram, Thirumangalam and Melur, besides Dindigul, Theni, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar districts.
