In Kanpur, a 50-year-old man, already serving a life sentence for the murder of his 10-month-old granddaughter, has been accused of killing his wife. The incident occurred when he allegedly attacked her with a trident after suspecting her of adding poisonous or intoxicating substances to his food. This shocking act highlights ongoing concerns about domestic violence and mental health issues within the legal system.
The accused, Kallan Raikwar, struck his wife (48) multiple times with the trident at their home in Ragauliya Bujurg village in the Kulpahar police station area on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. Kallan had been serving a life term in Satna jail, Madhya Pradesh, for the murder of his 10-month-old granddaughter in 2014. A court sentenced him to life imprisonment in 2017.
He had long suspected his wife of lacing his food with a toxic or intoxicating substance, leading to frequent disputes between the couple, according to police officers. He then remained seated beside her body for nearly three hours before informing relatives and police. Police detained Kallan after reaching the spot. He had been allowed to return home on parole every three months. Police are now examining whether the suspicion alone triggered the murder or whether another conflict was also involved.
ASP Vandana Singh said the accused has been taken into custody and a case registered under the relevant sections.
