Many locations that flooded during the July 2026 rain were underwater once again. Ahmedabad: Monday morning brought rain to Ahmedabad, quickly turning the commute into a test of patience. Roads flooded, underpasses shut, vehicles stalled, and traffic jams stretched across the city. The rain eased by afternoon, but it brought another reminder that even a few hours of rain can become a citywide problem. Rain began around 7am and continued until about 2pm, exposing the gaps in Ahmedabad’s pre-monsoon preparedness.
Though the showers were not exceptionally intense, the city recorded an average of 85.6mm between 6am and 3pm. The impact, however, was anything but moderate: more than 100 locations reported knee-deep water, while commuters were trapped in long traffic snarls across both eastern and western Ahmedabad. Bopal, Jodhpur, Sarkhej and Maktampura received more than 5 inches of rain, while Memnagar, Navrangpura, Vasna and Bodakdev recorded at least 4 inches. Vatva recorded the highest rainfall in the city at 143mm, followed closely by Sarkhej at 141mm. The downpour quickly turned several key roads into stretches of slow-moving traffic and stranded vehicles. Traffic movement was also severely affected on the SG Highway service roads, where overflowing duct lines laid parallel to the highway obstructed stormwater drainage. The disruption was particularly severe in western Ahmedabad. Water entered homes and residential societies in Memnagar, along Judges Bungalow Road and on Gurukul Road. Even after the rain eased, waterlogging continued on Judges Bungalow Road, near the multilevel parking crossroads on Sindhu Bhavan Road, along the Iskcon-Ambli BRTS corridor and on several connecting roads. The recurrence has renewed residents’ concerns about the effectiveness of the city’s stormwater drainage system. Trees fell on parked vehicles in Maninagar and near Parimal Garden in Navrangpura. However, drainage remained slow in several areas, with water remaining on the roads long after the rain had stopped. AMC and state irrigation department also opened nine gates of the Vasna Barrage. Yet Monday’s spell showed that even before the city reaches its seasonal benchmark, its roads, underpasses and drainage network remain vulnerable to a few hours of persistent rain.
