Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada District Congress Legal and Human Rights Department president Manoraj Rajeev has accused Mangaluru Bar Association president Jagadish Shenava and MLA Vedavyas Kamath of making misleading statements about the mobile phone jammer installed at the district prison in Kodialbail. Speaking at a press conference at the District Congress Committee (DCC) office on Tuesday, Rajeev said the issue could have been resolved through Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd. (TCIL), a central govt undertaking responsible for maintaining the jammer, if the two leaders were genuinely concerned.
“If the problem had not been resolved, objections could have been raised before the court at that stage,” Rajeev said. Rajeev said Shenava, as president of the bar association, could have urged the chief minister to approve the high court bench, release funds for judicial infrastructure and address the concerns of lawyers. He added that there was also scope for installing additional towers to improve the system and that the issue could have been taken up with Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta. “Instead, statements have been made about laying siege to the cabinet meeting in the name of the jammer issue. This appears politically motivated and intended to mislead the public,” he alleged.
He said the Mangaluru Bar Association and a local resident had filed a public interest litigation petition before the high court over the prison jammer. During the hearing in the court, it was informed that the technical problem had been rectified.
