SALEM: Salem district has been facing a shortage of Aavin milk over the past week, forcing families to buy costlier private brands.
Daily procurement at Salem Aavin unit has dropped from 6.5 lakh litres to 5.4 lakh litres.
“Only 2.3 lakh litres are allotted for local consumption, while nearly three lakh litres are sent to Chennai, creating a severe shortfall in Salem,” said an official from the Aavin, requesting anonymity. Recent protests by farmers seeking higher procurement prices have worsened the crisis. Many producers have begun supplying private companies offering better rates, further reducing Aavin’s intake.
Vans scheduled to arrive at 4am often reach outlets only by 9am, while evening supplies expected at 4pm arrive as late as 7.30pm. R Murugan, a shopkeeper in Salem Bazaar, said customers were growing angry over late supplies, forcing him to stock more expensive private milk. Residents complained of delivery delays. Families with children and elderly members have been particularly affected. Residents have urged district administration and Aavin management to restore adequate supplies and timely distribution, fearing continued hardship and greater dependence on private companies.
