Marine Salt Manufacturers Association Calls for National Institution to Advance Salt Industry
In Ahmedabad, the Marine Salt Manufacturers Association has proposed the establishment of a dedicated national institution aimed at modernizing the salt production sector. This initiative seeks to enhance research, skill development, and the implementation of sustainable practices in salt processing and quality control. The association emphasizes the need for a coordinated effort to improve industry standards and practices.

In a representation to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Gujarat Chief Minister’s Office, the association said the Indian salt industry faces challenges in meeting evolving global quality standards while preparing to raise production to nearly 55 million tonnes.
“The proposed institute should offer education, research, innovation and skill development in salt production, processing, quality control, logistics, environmental management and value-added products,” the association said. “The industry has very few qualified technical professionals specialising in salt production, processing and technology. There was no dedicated institution focused on salt science and technology,” the representation stated. It also sought industry-driven research and development to improve salt yields amid changing climatic conditions, increase evaporation efficiency and reduce production costs. The association listed consistent product quality, development of value-added products and by-products from salt and bittern, better storage and logistics, automation, digital technologies and sustainable production practices among key priorities. It suggested that the salt department continue to operate from Gujarat, with its headquarters in Gandhinagar .
