Lucknow: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended Adesh Choudhary, a contractual driver for Punjab National Bank’s currency chest in Saharanpur. This arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into a conspiracy involving counterfeit Indian currency notes. The NIA recovered fake currency with a total face value of ₹17.29 crore from the bank’s facility. The agency is continuing its investigation into the broader network associated with this counterfeit operation.
The case surfaced on Aug 29 after Saharanpur police received information about the recovery of counterfeit notes from the currency chest. An FIR was initially registered at Sadar Bazaar police station in Saharanpur under Section 178 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. NIA later took over the matter and re-registered the case on Sept 3 at its Lucknow unit. The agency earlier arrested FIR-named accused Amit Kumar on Sept 7. NIA said Choudhary was working at the PNB currency chest in Civil Lines, Saharanpur, and has been identified as a key accused. NIA said the investigation is continuing to uncover the larger conspiracy, establish individual roles and identify and arrest other accused and suspects. Investigators are examining his suspected involvement in the movement and handling of the fake notes and are looking for links to other persons who may have facilitated their placement inside the chest. During preliminary inquiry, the involvement of three bank employees also emerged, following which the bank suspended them. Download the TOI App.
