Srinivas Bochageri, president of Sri Ganeshotsav Mandal, Station Road, said the festival was started in 1977 by a group of Hindu and Muslim rickshaw drivers and has grown steadily over the years. He credited former president GR Kampli, who led the mandal for 42 years, with introducing mythological and historical tableaux as a hallmark of the celebrations. Organisers said members work tirelessly each year to create meaningful displays that blend faith, culture and history for devotees. Among the standout attractions is the tableau at Sri Ganeshotsav Mandal, Station Road, which depicts Goddess Tulja Bhavani blessing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and presenting him with the famed Bhavani sword to help him overcome his enemies. The mythologically themed decor and visual presentation have attracted considerable public attention. Several other mandals in the city have also embraced religious and historical themes. Shri Ganeshotsav Mandali at Hirepet, Bhuspet and Kanchgar Oni is presenting a three-to-four-minute play based on the legend of Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. At Gouli Galli in Durgad Bail, devotees are being treated to a Swamy Ayyappa-themed display, with the mantap designed on the lines of the Sabarimala temple . Varasiddi Vinayak Madam at Sheelavantar Oni has showcased the Kalki avatar of Lord Vishnu.
