Ahmedabad Experiences Heavy Rainfall, Surpassing Seasonal Average
On Friday morning, Ahmedabad recorded a significant rainfall event, totaling 73mm by 6pm. This amount exceeded the city’s annual average, with over 83% of the rain falling within a two-hour window. The most intense period occurred between 8am and 10am, when 61mm of rain was measured, reminiscent of the severe flooding experienced during the deluge on July 23. The heavy rainfall resulted in several roadways becoming temporarily inundated and caused power outages in some areas on the outskirts of the city. As a precaution, various schools, colleges, and offices opted for closures or implemented remote work arrangements in response to the conditions.
Since 2022, only 2023 had failed to cross the 100% mark of the annual average rainfall, the data showed. Ahmedabad recorded a maximum temperature of 29.8 degrees celsius on Friday, 4.2 degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature was 22.2 degrees celsius, 2.8 degrees below normal. Relative humidity was as high as 98% in the morning before falling to 66% by 5.30pm.
The latest spell also took Ahmedabad’s seasonal rainfall to 864mm, surpassing its average annual rainfall of 826mm. The heavy rain brought down temperatures significantly. The city had received 791mm till 6am on Friday, according to State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) data.
