Ahmedabad has achieved a notable position in the latest Oxford: The wider industry impact

Ahmedabad has achieved a notable position in the latest Oxford Economics Global Cities Index, ranking 15th among Indian cities and 571st worldwide. This index evaluated 1,000 cities based on their economic potential and various other criteria, highlighting Ahmedabad’s growing significance in the global urban landscape.

Among Indian cities, Delhi was the highest ranked at 268, followed by Bengaluru at 311 and Mumbai at 320. It ranked 379th in economics and 347th in human capital, against its overall position of 571.

Ahmedabad and Surat were also identified as “emerging standouts”, a category the report uses for cities in the developing world that are outperforming their respective countries. Experts in Gujarat said Ahmedabad’s performance pointed to the need for greater investment in quality of life and environmental improvement. Among Gujarat cities, Surat ranked 697th, Vadodara 702nd and Rajkot 824th. The index assesses cities on five parameters: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment and governance. Ahmedabad fared considerably better in economics and human capital than its overall ranking suggests. Its rankings slipped sharply, however, on quality of life, where it stood 881st, and environment, where it was placed 795th. It ranked 415th on governance. The environment category takes into account factors including air quality, emissions intensity, exposure to natural disasters, temperature anomalies and rainfall anomalies.
