“I was just trying to ensure I had life,” Sanders recalled while discussing the ordeal in his documentary. “I’m 10 toes down again,” Sanders said. The Colorado Buffaloes head coach recently received a pair of custom prosthetic toes for his left foot, marking another major milestone in his long health journey after he was forced to have two toes amputated following life-threatening blood-clot complications. Sanders’ son, Deion Sanders Jr., documented the emotional and hilarious moment on social media, showing his father receiving the prosthetic toes and trying them on for the first time. The new prosthetics replace Sanders’ missing big toe and second toe on his left foot. Designed to match his skin tone, they are more than just cosmetic. The devices are intended to provide additional support, improve balance, and restore proper alignment, helping Sanders bear weight more comfortably and reduce issues such as friction and blisters. At the time, Sanders underwent surgery for a dislocated toe and an inflamed nerve in his left foot. During his recovery, his toes began turning dark, raising concerns about the blood supply to his foot. Doctors eventually discovered multiple serious blood clots, including a clot in the femoral artery. Sanders also developed compartment syndrome, causing significant swelling in his leg and requiring additional surgery. His condition became so serious that doctors discussed the possibility of amputating his leg below the knee. Years after the amputation, Sanders finally received custom prosthetic replacements for the two missing toes. In the video shared by Deion Jr., Sanders was handed a box containing the new prosthetics. He immediately brought his trademark humor to the moment, joking that the toes looked as though they had been wrapped up as a gift.
