Pune: Multiple student organisations at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) have protested a Rs10 hike in mess meal rates, demanding the university bear the additional cost instead of passing it on to students.
The university, through a Sept 17 circular, increased meal rates by Rs10 per thali across all messes, effective from October 1, citing rising costs of foodgrains, cooking oil, pulses, dairy products, commercial LPG and workers’ wages. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also said if the new rates are not rolled back before Oct 1, it will launch a protest. The Vidyapeeth Vidyarthi Sangharsh Kruti Samiti (VVSK) said it understood the financial strain on mess operators but argued that students, many of whom are yet to receive scholarships and other educational benefits, should not bear the additional burden. “We will conduct a student survey from Sept 18 to 24 and submit its findings to the university and other authorities,” said Abhishek Shelkar of VVSK.
