Nashik city received 24mm rainfall in just 30-40 minutes
Nashik : Just 30-40 minutes of heavy rain after an eight-day gap left parts of Nashik waterlogged on Monday afternoon.
He said it was essential to establish whether the flow was natural stormwater runoff, sewage or a combination of both. Jani said the natural course of Godavari around Ramkund, where the Kumbh Mela is held, is buried beneath concrete structures. “If scientific investigations establish that the flow is linked to the original course of Aruna river, it could strengthen the case for revival of the long-buried river,” Jani said.
Traffic slowed at several locations as the city received 24mm of rain in the short spell. Panchavati and Nashik Road were among the areas worst hit by waterlogging. The sudden downpour also battered roads already dug up or under repair for Kumbh Mela works. Temporary pothole repairs were washed away at some places. Excavated stretches turned muddy. Loose gravel and debris spilled onto roads, forcing motorists to negotiate slippery and damaged stretches. The rain also sent Ganesh mandal volunteers scrambling to protect decorations and themed displays from damage. Parts of Nashik district, meanwhile, received rain after a dry spell of more than three weeks. The showers also raised questions over water flowing into Godavari at Ramkund. Residents complained of a foul smell after the rain, even as the flow into the river increased noticeably. Social activist Devang Jani urged Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) to immediately conduct a hydrological and environmental assessment at the Aruna-Godavari confluence. The original channel of Aruna river was also covered years ago.
