Chennai: A truck driver died and 17 people, including a govt bus driver, sustained injuries after a sand-laden truck crossed the median and collided with a TNSTC bus near Pazhaveli on the Trichy-Chennai National Highway on Monday morning. The deceased was identified as Anand , 48, of Thimmavaram near Chengalpet. The govt bus, with Surya , 40, at the wheel, was travelling from Tiruvannamalai to the Kilambakkam bus terminus in Chennai with more than 25 passengers. Around 7.15am, the bus was proceeding on the Trichy-Chennai bypass road near Pazhaveli when, on the other side, Anand lost control of the sand-laden truck and it crossed the median and entered the opposite carriageway.

The truck collided with the oncoming govt bus. The front portions of the bus and the truck were badly damaged in the impact. Anand died on the spot. After being alerted by motorists, Chengalpet taluk police and fire and rescue personnel reached the spot and carried out rescue operations. The injured were taken to Chengalpattu District Government Hospital. The collision disrupted traffic on both sides of the highway for more than two hours. Police and fire personnel used cranes to remove the vehicles from the carriageway and restore traffic movement. Chengalpet Taluk police registered a case. Download the TOI App.
