Madurai: An arterial road connecting Theni Bypass Road with Madurai’s core city has remained in a shambles for nearly a decade, with deep craters, broken surfaces and missing streetlights exposing what residents call prolonged neglect by the city corporation.
Because of the volume of vehicles using the road, a senior corporation official said complete relaying would require traffic restrictions for several days.
“The road is frequently used by ambulances, but they are forced to travel slowly even during emergencies because of the potholes and speed breakers,” said social activist V P Manikandan, who lives near the road. He said patchwork could not withstand even one monsoon and sought complete relaying of the stretch. The official said major road work would be considered after the monsoon.
