Madurai : A total of 6,349 Vinayaka idols were immersed across the south districts between September 14 and 20 amid elaborate security arrangements, with the processions and immersion events concluding peacefully.
More than 15,000 personnel were deployed across the districts as part of security arrangements for the Vinayaka Chathurthi festivities, according to police. Officials said cooperation from organisers, community representatives and the public, coupled with coordinated policing and advance planning, helped ensure that all 6,349 idols were taken in processions and immersed in an orderly manner across the South Zone without any major law-and-order incidents. Officials said the meetings played a key role in ensuring cooperation among different groups and the smooth conduct of the festivities. Police personnel were stationed along procession routes, immersion points and other sensitive locations to maintain law and order, regulate traffic and ensure public safety. Ahead of the processions, police conducted coordination meetings with representatives of various communities, procession organisers and other stakeholders. Traffic regulation measures were also put in place along major procession routes to facilitate the movement of idols to designated immersion points while minimising inconvenience to motorists and other road users. Police closely monitored the processions and immersion activities throughout the week to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure compliance with prescribed guidelines. Download the TOI App.
