Kochi : A man was taken into custody on Tuesday night after pouring petrol on a woman and setting her on fire at Ambadimoola in Kakkanad.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident and have recovered CCTV footage from the scene of crime. However, locals spotted the accused in an adjacent area. Suspicious of the burn marks on his hands, the locals alerted the police. The police arrived at the spot and took him into custody. The victim was returning home after work when the accused identified as Anilkumar intercepted her on the road. An argument ensued between the two, after which the accused poured petrol he had brought with him and set her ablaze. Following the attack, the accused fled the scene.
The woman, who suffered severe burn injuries, has been admitted to hospital. The attack took place in a narrow lane while the woman was heading to her hostel at 8pm on Tuesday.
