Madurai: The expanded Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme was rolled out across Madurai

Following the Chief Minister’s launch of the expanded Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme in Chennai, students from classes 6 to 8 at the Government Model Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Othakkadai, Madurai district, partook in the breakfast.

Madurai: The expanded Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme was rolled out across Madurai district on Tuesday, extending free morning meals to students of Classes 6 to 8.

Addressing the gathering in Melur constituency, Viswanathan recalled receiving free school meals during his childhood and said the support had helped him pursue higher education and enter public life. Following the statewide launch by chief minister C Joseph Vijay through videoconference, district-level events were held at Govt Higher Secondary School in Thumbaipatti and Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School within Madurai Corporation limits. At Thumbaipatti, higher education minister P Viswanathan and Madurai district collector Nishant Krishna participated in the rollout and served breakfast to students.

The expanded scheme will cover 69,730 middle school students across 574 schools in Madurai district. Within Madurai Corporation limits, 52,605 students in 251 schools will benefit. He praised Joseph Vijay for extending the scheme to upper primary classes, saying free and nutritious breakfast would help ensure hunger and poverty did not prevent children from accessing education. At Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School, mayor-in-charge T Nagarajan, corporation commissioner Gaurav Kumar and Madurai South MLA MM Gopison served breakfast and shared the meal with students.
