The Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled a rehabilitation plan for approximately 650 traders impacted by the closure of shops in Central Market, a decision prompted by a recent Supreme Court ruling. The announcement was made by BJP MP Arun Govil and UP Minister Somendra Tomar during a press briefing at Meerut’s Circuit House on Wednesday.
BJP Responds to Supreme Court Ruling on Demolition
BJP officials announced that they cannot disclose details of the new policy regarding the demolition of properties due to the ongoing model code of conduct for the MLC graduate and teachers’ constituency elections. They emphasized, “We respect the Supreme Court’s verdict,” noting that the demolition was executed in accordance with the court’s order and cannot be reversed.
In response to the situation, Minister Tomar revealed that the Meerut Development Authority (MDA) will conduct a new survey of properties in the affected area. He stated that traders impacted by the demolition will be offered shops on lease at a nominal rent.
Additionally, Govil mentioned ongoing efforts to locate alternative sites for the displaced traders to resume their businesses. While he acknowledged that the implementation of this plan may require time, he confirmed that “a beginning has been made” with the approval of the state government.
Lease Program for Affected Shops Under Consideration
Tomar announced that the state is considering a rehabilitation policy for residents impacted by recent developments. The proposal includes leasing shops to affected individuals, with the state planning to impose a nominal rent for these spaces.
