Kottayam : A 45-year-old woman from Changanassery who suffered complications during a liposuction (a surgical procedure that uses suction to remove unwanted fat) on her hand died Tuesday at a private medical college hospital in Thiruvalla, as the family accused the medical facility where the surgery was performed of medical negligence. The complaint stated Vidya was admitted around 8.45am. It added that she spoke to Santosh by phone around 11.28am, appearing to be in normal health. However, Santosh alleged that a doctor at the facility called him around 12:58pm to inform him that complications had arisen during the surgery.
She was subsequently shifted to Believers Church Medical College Hospital, Thiruvalla, where she remained in critical condition and died late Tuesday night, family sources said. The hospital officials, however, maintained that no procedural lapse occurred, saying Vidya suffered a cardiac complication during the surgery, which they said led to the deterioration in her health. The complainant alleged that the facility lacked adequate emergency and life-saving infrastructure, including ventilator support, for a cosmetic procedure, and that there was a delay in shifting her to a larger hospital when her condition worsened. Relatives alleged negligence during the surgery and have sought registration of an FIR, along with seizure of case sheets, anaesthesia records and CCTV footage from the facility and constitution of an expert medical board to investigate. She is survived by her husband, S Santosh, and children Siddharth and Sangeeth.
