The company says the biometric authentication is processed on the device, allowing users to avoid entering their UPI PIN in public. It is also designed to reduce transaction failures caused by incorrectly entered PINs. Samsung Wallet continues to support other digital payment and storage features, including contactless payments, bill payments, digital keys, boarding passes and tickets.

How does Samsung Wallet’s biometric authentication work

The new feature is available for UPI payments of up to Rs 10,000, according to Samsung. Therefore, the exact on-screen steps may vary depending on the Galaxy device and Wallet version.

Samsung says Galaxy device users can use the device’s fingerprint sensor to authenticate UPI payments through Wallet. Samsung says its on-device biometric authentication is intended to protect user privacy by removing the need to enter a UPI PIN in public. Samsung says Wallet is protected by Samsung Knox and uses fingerprint recognition and encryption to secure sensitive information. The company also says sensitive items are stored in a secure environment designed to protect them against digital and physical hacking.

For eligible transactions, the fingerprint replaces the need to enter the UPI PIN. Open Samsung Wallet on your Galaxy smartphone. Start a UPI payment through Samsung Wallet. Use the fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy device when biometric authentication is prompted. Complete the payment after the fingerprint is successfully authenticated. Samsung’s announcement does not specify a separate setting or activation process for enabling biometric authentication for UPI payments. The feature uses the Galaxy device’s fingerprint sensor to authenticate the user on the device. It can also help avoid failed transactions caused by mistyped UPI PINs. Instead of manually entering the PIN for eligible payments, users can authenticate the transaction using their registered fingerprint. Samsung Wallet supports UPI payments, contactless payments using tokenised credit and debit cards, and utility bill payments. The app can also store digital keys, boarding passes, tickets and ID cards. You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient. Take the AIQ test.
