Ajit Maity being produced in the CJM’s court
Midnapore: Former Pingla MLA Ajit Maity was arrested on Friday morning on charges of extortion after a BJP worker filed a complaint against him, accusing the veteran Trinamool neta of assuring the complainant – then a TMC worker – a block president’s post and taking Rs 15 lakh from him in 2016.
Pingla Police picked up the 69-year-old Maity from his Madpur residence. The FIR was lodged at Pingla PS on Wednesday by BJP worker Gobinda Das, who claims that in 2016, he was Trinamool Jamna area president in Pingla block.
He has been slapped with extortion and criminal intimidation charges, said assistant public prosecutor Syed Nazim Habib. Maity said, “I have spent my entire life in politics… this is politically motivated and a conspiracy While being taken to court from Debra Police Station. He was produced in Midnapore CJM’s court and sent to four days of police custody. He alleged that Maity, West Midnapore Trinamool district president, didn’t promote him even after receiving the money. Maity allegedly threatened Das when he asked him to return the money. Das was later removed from his post in TMC, after which he joined BJP, the complainant claims. Maity and Hazra didn’t have an interaction inside the court. Maity assumed the responsibilities of TMC West Midnapore district president following the regime change in the state and had recently held a meeting with netas close to Mamata Banerjee .
He previously served as the president of Ghatal organisational district and the chairman of the undivided Midnapore organisational district committee. Interestingly, former Midnapore MLA and Trinamool’s former district president Sujoy Hazra was also produced at CJM’s court on Thursday.
