New Delhi: A court Saturday deferred the hearing on an appeal filed by four women wrestlers against the acquittal of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in a sexual harassment case as special judge Dig Vinay Singh was away for judicial training. The matter will be heard Monday.
The wrestlers, through a team of advocates led by senior advocate Rebecca John, filed the criminal revision petition Friday, challenging the Aug 3 acquittal order and alleging that the magisterial court’s findings were based on “conjectures and surmises” and an erroneous and selective assessment of the evidence. The judgment, the petitioners also claimed, relied on outdated and stereotypical assumptions about the expected behaviour of survivors of sexual harassment or assault. They have also challenged the acquittal of former WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar on the charge of criminal intimidation.
