Kanpur: Tourism can provide a robust model for the development of the city, said educationist and tourism expert Dr Sudhanshu Rai while calling for a coordinated effort to promote the city’s heritage and tourist attractions. Forest officer Firoz said the zoo would be developed as an eco-tourism hub, while forest officer Ajay Singh highlighted the importance of connecting children with nature. He proposed appointing ‘Tourism Ambassadors’ in every school and ‘Tourism Friends’ from various institutions to take the story of Kanpur’s heritage to the world. He also suggested setting up tourism clubs in schools to encourage students to explore and promote the city’s historical and cultural significance. On the occasion of World Tourism Day, the Society for Tourism Development and Muskaray Kanpur organised a symposium on tourism prospects at Allen Forest Zoo. Anand Gupta, vice-president of the Society for Tourism Development, proposed preparing a QR code-based digital brochure containing information about Kanpur’s tourist attractions, ghats, temples, food streets and hotels. Founding members Rochak Rohatgi and Swayam Nanda proposed organising regular ‘Tourism Talks’ to bring historians, artistes, educationists, photographers and YouTubers together on a common platform for continuous discussions on tourism development. Historians Gopal Khanna and Vinod Tandon suggested establishing a museum at the zoo to showcase artefacts associated with Kanpur’s history and heritage. City residents Rajesh Grover and Akhil Tyagi proposed launching a weekly ‘Kanpur Darshan’ bus tour to familiarise people with the city’s attractions. Social activists Dinesh Varshney and Birju suggested organising Kanpur Mahotsav and Bithoor Mahotsav in a new format, while Seema Nigam and Anup Dwivedi called for preparing a three-year tourism roadmap for the city.
