A city court on Wednesday remanded Kharat to police custody till Oct 2 in the cheating and Black Magic Act case registered with the Sarkarwada police on March 28.
Nashik : Astrologer Ashok Kharat allegedly posed as a divine incarnation and promised “divine powers” and business prosperity to dupe a cloth merchant of Rs 2.6 lakh and three gold rings weighing 20gm.
The merchant allegedly handed him three gold rings and Rs 2.6 lakh in instalments. The alleged fraud took place in Dec 2022. “We have received Kharat’s custody till Oct 2.
Police said Kharat convinced the merchant that gemstones provided by him would bring prosperity and divine powers. Sarkarwada police will also investigate one more case against him,” investigating officer, assistant inspector Prakash Patil, said. The merchant, however, approached police only in March after media reports about cases of sexual assault and black magic registered against Kharat came out.
State govt has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe 11 cases against Kharat. The Sarkarwada cheating case is being investigated separately.
