Lucknow: Deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak on Wednesday said the state govt will provide all possible support to help bamboo artisans connect their traditional skills with modern technology and wider markets, creating fresh opportunities for employment and economic empowerment.

Addressing the Banskar Samaj Mahasammelan organised by the All India Banskar Mahasangh in Lucknow, Pathak said bamboo craftsmanship had been an integral part of India’s cultural heritage and rural economy for generations. Pathak said the material, once primarily associated with social and cultural ceremonies, now had significant potential in environmental conservation and livelihood generation. Calling plastic a major environmental challenge, he said bamboo offered a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative. “Products such as bottles, household items and decorative articles made from bamboo are gaining popularity in domestic as well as international markets,” he said. Pathak said both the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh govt were promoting bamboo-based industries and exploring ways to provide better market access to artisans. “Increased demand for bamboo products can generate new avenues for employment, self-employment and income generation while strengthening local economies,” he added. Pathak said the craftsmanship of the Banskar community was not merely a source of livelihood but an important part of the country’s cultural identity. Stressing that expansion of bamboo usage was crucial for environmental protection, preservation of traditional knowledge and economic empowerment, Pathak said bringing bamboo artisans into the mainstream of development was a collective responsibility.
