Because so many symptoms, like a sore chest, mood swings, or a bout of tiredness, show up both before your period and in early pregnancy, honestly, sorting through those early signs can get confusing, especially. Have you ever found yourself suddenly worn out for no clear reason, your favorite foods start tasting off, or maybe your breasts feel extra sensitive out of nowhere? You might be wondering: Is this PMS, stress, or could I actually be pregnant? It’s enough to make your head spin (and, quite frankly, jump to conclusions).

It builds up slowly, which means a home pregnancy test won’t always catch it until at least the day your period is due (sometimes a bit earlier if you use those ultra-sensitive tests, but even then, early negatives happen). Because the hCG just isn’t high enough yet, testing before that can give you a negative that isn’t true. Here’s the thing: you can get lost analyzing symptoms all day, but nothing beats a pregnancy test for answers.

But here’s the thing: your body doesn’t rocket those numbers to “pregnant!” right away. If you still haven’t gotten your period and the test says no, try again in a few days or check in with your doctor. What really happens in your body right after conception is a little hormone shake-up, kicked off by the rise of human chorionic gonadotropin, better known as hCG, which is the hormone pregnancy tests look for. This one feels obvious. If your periods are like clockwork and suddenly don’t show up, that’s a solid hint something’s up. Of course, it doesn’t guarantee pregnancy. Stress, weight loss, illness, or hormonal shifts can all delay your cycle. But if you’ve had unprotected sex, or even a contraception failure, and your period doesn’t start, it’s time for that test. Dragging yourself out of bed when you’ve slept plenty? That kind of unexplained exhaustion often shows up early in pregnancy. Rising progesterone plays a role, too. But honestly, life in general can make you tired: think bad sleep, busy schedules, stress. Unless it’s paired with another sign, it could be anything. Morning sickness is famous, but it doesn’t always happen in the morning, and not everyone gets it. You might just notice you’re queasy, want to gag at certain smells, or that your favorite food now seems gross. It can kick in early or show up weeks later. And not having nausea? Doesn’t mean you’re not pregnant. Wait until the day your period is supposed to start; that’s when most home tests are reliable. If it’s positive, reach out to your healthcare provider right away so you can start prenatal care.
