An IMD official said the withdrawal requires five consecutive rainless days, an anticyclone in the lower troposphere and reduced moisture levels, which have not yet been observed
Agartala: The eight northeast states recorded 26% less rainfall than normal during the 2026 Southwest Monsoon from June to Sept, even as the IMD is yet to formally announce the monsoon’s withdrawal from the region. Last year, the monsoon withdrew from the Northeast on Oct 14.
An IMD official said the withdrawal requires five consecutive rainless days, an anticyclone in the lower troposphere and reduced moisture levels, which have not yet been observed.
Meghalaya received only 1,077.1mm of rain against the expected 2,695.3mm.
The rainfall deficit has raised concerns over agriculture, particularly in Manipur, where ongoing ethnic conflict has also disrupted farming activities, according to agriculture scientists.
The monsoon arrived in the Northeast on June 7 and covered the entire region by June 10. Its progress had been closely watched amid concerns over the potential impact of El Niño on rainfall.
