Yamuna to be surveyed for rejuvenation works: The wider industry impact

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: In a move to rejuvenate Yamuna, Delhi govt has started the process of conducting detailed topographical and bathymetric surveys along the river from Palla in north Delhi to Jaitpur in south Delhi before taking up large-scale dredging work. The topographical survey will map the land, riverbanks and floodplain, while the bathymetric survey will measure the depth and shape of the riverbed underwater.

Such features beyond 100 metres of either bank will also be covered,” said an official. It will also identify places of worship, ancient monuments, culverts, foundations of overhead power lines and other structures in and around the river. The survey will measure the river at regular points to understand how wide and deep it is and how its shape changes from the point it enters Delhi till the point it exits the capital. By establishing the existing depth, floodplain contours and location of structures, the govt will have a clear basis for deciding where dredging can be undertaken and how the work can be executed without damaging existing infrastructure or disturbing the river’s flow. The exercise will also compare the present condition of Yamuna with earlier surveys using old drawings, which will help identify changes in the river’s course and topography.
