The employees later approached Ahmedabad Railway Police and lodged a complaint on Friday.

The theft occurred on platform number 7 amid a rush of passengers as the employee was preparing to board the Mumbai-bound train. 53-year-old Manchharam Prajapati, a resident of Raipur who hails from Rajasthan, has been working with an angadia firm for about a decade, according to the complaint. Around 10.30pm, after the Gujarat Mail arrived on platform 7, Prajapati boarded the train and placed one of the bags under his reserved seat. It contained 11,901 polished diamonds weighing around 100.65 carats and valued at about Rs 15 lakh.

Railway police have registered a case against an unidentified person and launched an investigation.

The parcel had been sent from Palanpur for delivery to a diamond firm in Mumbai, according to the complaint. He and firm partner Madansingh Rathod had gone to Kalupur railway station to board the Gujarat Mail and deliver valuables to Mumbai. Prajapati was carrying three bags containing consignments meant for delivery at different destinations. The diamond parcel had been kept in a specially designed vest worn beneath his clothes, which had separate pockets for carrying valuables. He then returned to the coach entrance to collect another bag that Rathod was carrying on the platform. During this movement through the crowd, an unidentified person allegedly used a sharp object to slit the right pocket of Prajapati’s trousers and the vest underneath. The accused allegedly removed a parcel containing diamonds and fled unnoticed. After discovering the theft, Prajapati informed Rathod and the firm’s partners. Since they were carrying other consignments and valuables meant for delivery at various locations, they continued their journey to Mumbai and completed the deliveries before returning to Ahmedabad.
