New Delhi: A cash collection employee, who claimed he had been robbed of Rs 30 lakh by three motorcycle-borne assailants in west Delhi’s Moti Nagar, and his associate were arrested after police uncovered that the robbery had allegedly been staged to misappropriate the money.
The case came to light on Oct 1 when Parveen Malhotra, employed at a plastic goods shop in Tikri Kalan, approached Moti Nagar police station claiming that three motorcycle-borne men had intercepted him near Zakhira Flyover and snatched a bag containing Rs 30 lakh.
Malhotra told police that he had collected the cash from three locations on his employer’s instructions and was returning on his motorcycle when the alleged robbery took place. Further verification of the route taken by the complainant and inconsistent statements provided by him raised suspicion,” said DCP (West) Hareshwar V Swami. Police said he handed over the cash-filled bag to his associate, Parveen, at Keshav Puram Metro Station after collecting the amount.
He also alleged that one of the assailants had injured him on the chest with a blade. However, investigators found discrepancies during the probe. “During investigation, police noticed that the complainant’s shirt did not have a corresponding tear despite a cut on his chest. Analysing CCTV footage, we found discrepancies in his statement. During sustained questioning, Malhotra allegedly confessed to staging the robbery in a bid to pocket the money.
Further investigation is underway.
