New Delhi: A PhD scholar from IIT Delhi passed away 46 days after he was found unconscious at his rented home in southwest Delhi’s Munirka village.
He died at AIIMS on Oct 3,” said police. Police are probing whether his state on Aug 18 resulted from an attempted suicide and have registered a case under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the BNS at Kishangarh police station, following directions from the Supreme Court and on the basis of a complaint filed by the security officer of IIT Delhi. In Aug, a 31-year-old student of MSc Physics died after allegedly falling from the sixth floor of a building on campus.
This incident adds to the deaths of IIT Delhi students reported recently.
Police said the scholar was alone inside the house at the time of the incident, as also supported by CCTV footage from a camera installed outside the residence, the police statement added. “The door of the house was locked from the inside and was subsequently broken open by the neighbours. Police shifted the injured scholar to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he remained under treatment. The postmortem report is awaited to ascertain the cause of death. During the proceedings, neither the family members nor witnesses raised any suspicion or allegation against any individual. In March, a first-year BTech student was suspected to have died by suicide on the campus. Police found no suicide note.
An IIT Delhi official said the student’s family were with him while he was under treatment, and the institute continues to extend necessary support to the family.
