Man booked for casteist slurs, assaulting woman in meeting

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Hyderabad: A former village organisation assistant (VOA) was allegedly abused with casteist slurs and assaulted during a Gram Sabha meeting in Nalgonda district on Friday, prompting Chintapalli police to register a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The complainant, Ganipally Madhavi (30) of PK Mallepally village, told police that she was attending the Gram Sabha around 1.30 pm and discussing issues with women members of the Samabhavana Sangham when Koppula Amaranath (40) allegedly approached her and picked up a quarrel over an old dispute.

Madhavi said she had worked as the VOA of PK Mallepally for about eight years before being removed from the post around four months ago. Police said the dispute over her removal was among the issues being examined as part of the investigation.

Based on her complaint, Chintapalli police registered a case under relevant provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Further investigation is underway.
